One way you can use to promote your site is by submitting it to directories. Some people do mass directory submissions. While there can be some benefits to this, I prefer to do them by hand. You can get very quick search engine ranking by mass submitting, but it usually does not last very long, unless you do intense follow up.
If you submit by hand to a couple every day, several days a week, you will get ranked a bit slower, but it lasts longer and builds a more solid foundation, from what I have been able to determine.
Also, make sure the directory is appropriate for your site. Some directories are focused on a particular topic, such as Business to Business or Arts and Crafts. Most directories are rather broad. Just take the extra minute to ensure where you are posting is a good fit for your site.
When submitting to a directory, make sure you drill down top the appropriate category and subcategory. Do not post to a wrong category or higher up in the hierarchy of categories. Some people, when new to directory submitting, think they will get spotted easier if they are not as far down. Keep in mind the advantage of a directory is not so that your site can be seen by human eyes. To find sites, most people use search engines such as Google, Yahoo or Bing, rather than directories. Directories are seen mostly by the search engines, and to get better seen by the search engines, you want the keywords on your site to be appropriate for the category in which it is listed in the directory.
For example, if I was to list a site related to my Independent Associate position with Viridian Energy, I could put it in Household/Budget/Expense Savings or Energy/Electricity/Low Cost, but I would not put it in Business/Equipment/Office Machines.
